Booker T. Washington students witness their teacher graduate college (Miami Herald)
Nearly two dozen students from Booker T. Washington Senior High in Overtown
took an unusual field trip Thursday morning.
They watched their teacher and mentor, Kristal Hechavarria, graduate from the
University of Miami. They spotted her mortar board — reading “Ms. H” in
orange felt — across the BankUnited Center. And the high schoolers got a
shout-out from UM President Donna Shalala.
“All of our young guests are on target to graduate this year or next. All have
college aspirations,” Shalala said. “Let’s welcome Young Hood Graduates.”
That’s what the teens call the mentor group with Hechavarria. This semester,
the 24-year-old worked as a student-teacher at Booker T. Washington — the
first UM student placed there.
Hechavarria, a double major in English and education, wanted her students to
witness the commencement, with about 850 graduates, and to envision themselves
walking across the stage one day. “This is my present to them for helping me
graduate and teaching me,” she said. “I didn’t just learn about teaching. I
learned about myself. I want to be like them,” she said.
Hechavarria, who grew up in Hialeah and graduated from Hialeah-Miami Lakes
Senior High, said she learned things like resilience. …
