So how do metal detectors work, exactly? The core technology at the heart of most metal detecting systems involves generating an alternating electromagnetic field via an electric oscillator coil. This field causes (or induces) any metal objects in its vicinity to generate their own magnetic fields, which the detector then identifies with a built-in magnetometer.
If the magnetometer detects that an anomalous magnetic field has been induced by the oscillator, the detector generates a tone or provides a visual display to let the operator know there’s possible treasure in the area. Metal detectors also have serious security, military, and construction applications.
Specialized models are used for detecting mines and hidden weapons, and for security screening at airports. If you’ve ever traveled by air, you’ve undoubtedly passed through a metal detector checkpoint, which includes a scan by a walk-through detector and often an individual screening with a hand-held wand detector as well. In the construction industry, metal detectors are used to locate underground pipes, cables, and other metal objects on a building site.
