Eliminating Acne Is Going to be Easier Using Blue Light Acne Treatments
Blue light acne treatment is valuable in helping to get rid of acne. You really need to understand why blue light is so successful against acne.
Many adults and approximately 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. An excess of skin oil (sebum) mixes with dead skin cells to block the pores and create pimples. Bacteria living in the plugged up pore begin to multiply and irritate adjacent cells. The irritated spots are noticeably red and feel sore and turn out to be the pimples we link to acne.
There are three popular therapies connected with acne prevention. Removing surplus oils on the skin stands out as the primary step. A mild anti-bacterial cream or gel is then used to eliminate surface bacteria. When pores become blocked up they comprise whiteheads or blackheads. The location of the obstruction is the most important difference between a whitehead and a blackhead. When the blockage is further down into the pore, the surface can shut in around the pore keeping it light in color which results in a whitehead.
When the bacteria begin multiplying within the blocked pore the cells surrounding the pore become irritated and turn red, forming a pimple. The area infected can grow and the size and magnitude of the blemish can expand away from the cells belonging to the pore. For instance, pressure over a pimple can force infected oil further down into the sebaceous gland and even into deeper skin layers and develop into a cyst.
You can appreciate how important it will be to eradicate the bacteria at the site of the pimple. This will lessen the irritation and decrease the size and intensity of the blemish. Serious acne can often be taken care of with systemic medicines like oral anti-biotics. Most milder acne outbreaks are usually dealt with effectively by treatments applied locally.
One such therapy is acne light treatment. While sunlight has always been know to help acne, scientists looked at specific colors of the spectrum to determine more particularly the range of colors that are actually effective. One early investigation discovered that light within the blue-violet color range was particularly useful. This color range impacts an organic compound within the acne bacteria. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
To work against the rapidly multiplying bacteria, three consecutive treatments are required to kill the whole set of bacteria in a pimple. With the bacteria gone, the irritation is eliminated and the healing process can take place to restore the normal skin condition.
The blue light can be provided light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, fluorescent lamps, as well as bright full spectrum light. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is similar to an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. Frequently your dermatologist will rub on aminolevulinic acid (brand name Levulan) to affected areas prior to the blue light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that under blue light causes damage to certain skin cells.
While treatments from a dermatologist might cost several hundred dollars each, low cost home devices have found there way to the market. Competition is keeping the price for many of the devices in a reasonable range from around $40 to $300 or so.
Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin has to heal. But, compared to treatments like benzoyl peroxide, lots of people have found blue light acne treatment to be less irritating to the skin and more effective at getting rid of acne.
