Do-It-Yourself Installment of Window Pane Mirrors
It might be too costly today to hire for somebody to install pane mirrors. They usually do it themselves to save their construction expenses. But installing a window pane mirror requires enough knowledge and experience to be effectively set up. Chances are you will damage the glass as well as harm yourself in the process. First and foremost you have to estimate the cost of materials based on the actual measurement of your window then gather all of the materials needed for the installation. The next step for your window pane mirror installation is to measure your window pane using a measuring tape. Make sure to have an allowance for the expansion and contraction of the glass. Usually professionals cut off a 6th to an 8th of an inch out of the final dimensions. Cutting glass precisely is hard, so you might want to get a ready made glass from home improvement stores.
If your window is previously installed with a glass and you want to replace it with a mirror better remove the sash or hinges. Previous putty fillings must be entirely removed. If you are having problems removing the putty fillings, you can use a knife or anything with a sharp edge. Be extra careful in doing this as well in removing the glass otherwise you will damage or destroy it.
Then, after the cleaning and you have removed the glass, the wood frame must be treated. It is necessary to weatherproof it and most of all to preserve the moisture thus allowing it to last longer. There are several ways to treat the wood; you make use of chemicals or you can simply paint it.
You must first build a cushion first by adding a glaze before you install the mirror. If you are planing to install a larger mirror, make sure that you do not do it alone. You must find an assistant, preferably male; you need the muscles so that you can effectively put it in the right place while keeping yourself and the glass in one piece. After successfully installing the glass to it’s frame, use a caulking gun to add further glaze in the edges. Then, when the putty has settled down, clean the edges for a smooth look.
Add glazier points to the putty to provide more support. Add some more putty to ensure the safety of your glass and clear the excess when the putty has settled. Use a sand paper to smoothen the edges of your window pane mirror then paint it with your desired color.
