What was a Pony and Muscle Car?
During the Nineteen Sixties and lasting until the start of the Seventies, a unique variety of American Car appeared , and almost instantly became widely sought after , particularly with sports car enthusiasts , before disappearing cursorily from the scene to become a collectors car – This was the age of ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars were called this due to their high cc performance motors and ridiculously quick acceleration.
The majority of these muscle cars were constructed with V8 engines generating over 300 to 400 brake horse power and consequently were always extremely costly to repair .
Muscle cars usedhigh performance engine parts such as specialist valves , camshafts ,air intakes advanced carburettors and free flowing exhausts that helped to generateextra engine power and consequently – higher car insurance premiums
Specialist fast cars before the Nineteen Sixties were unremarkably the heavily built top of the range autos fitted with the makers most powerful engine available .
The exclusion to the rule was the Chevrolet Corvette , America’s first sports car built in 1953 . By 1962 the Chevrolet Corvette had been upgraded with a V8 engine throwing out 327 hp and became the first of the true type of two seater US Muscle cars, replacing the much heavier models .
With the success of the Ford Mustang created in 1964 other makers marques were quick to follow and hence a lot of the sports car market becoming controlled by lightweight autos cars with V8 engines which became known as ‘Pony Cars’, although many of the older classics such as the T-Bird were upgraded with bigger engines .
The Muscle car period ended in the mid seventies with the oil crisis and petrol rationing , which when coupled with incredibly high insurance premiums and the start of exhaust emission controls , led to a a lack of demand and the cars passed into history as some of the greatest American Autos ever made.
