The Pontiac Catalina 1963 Was In front of its Peers in Style, Extravagance
Admittedly, the U.S. automobile industry is competitive beyond belief, and few cars seem to totally outdistance the crowd in any given year. But, occasionally there are exceptions when totally innovative body styles and high-powered engines set some makes of vehicle apart, and one such car was the Pontiac Catalina 1963.
There were seven different models of 1963 Catalina made from among the total of 235,000 Catalina’s Pontiac manufactured that year. Look at a ’63 Catalina today and one still sees the features that made it a major hit nearly a half-century back.
An angled roof and clean, square lines provided the ’63 Catalina with a rare look of luxury and style. Other distinguishing characteristics included upward curving taillights and recessed split grilles. Other visual features included full-length body moldings and what looked to be unusually small hubcaps.
The high-end factory price for a ’63 Catalina was $3,300 for a convertible, while prices for the two-door sedan dipped as low as $2,725. About 80,000 four-door sedans were manufactured in 1963, which placed it as the No. 1 seller from among the seven models of Catalina sold that year. Slightly higher priced than the two-door sedan, the four-door sedan sold for $2,795.
Power and visuals weren’t all that created the public’s love affair with the ’63 Catalina; it also was priced similar to the Ford Galaxy, Chevy Impala, and Dodge 880.
Truly, engines beneath hoods of the ’63 were among the biggest and strongest of that day. The larger ’63 Catalina cars were stocked with 389 cubic inch engines capable of producing 410 horsepower of thrust. Because of the high speeds these cars consistently reached in short periods of time, suggestions on the street were made that the 389 could produce 500 or even 550 horsepower of thrust.
Huge successes at NASCAR races and on drag strips the previous two years set the stage for the even more powerful ‘63 Catalina.
Although buying a convertible Cars for sale undoubtedly would be expensive almost a half century after it was first manufactured, anyone interested in the vehicle can go online and buy a 1:18 scale Precision Die-Cast Replica of the car at an extremely reasonable price.
