Several hours north of Karijini National Park you’ll find the mining centre of Port Hedland. It’s the biggest town in the district and approximately 15,000 people stay there. Every month, nearly 20 million tonnes of iron ore pass through the main harbour, meant for China, Japan and USA. Some other major exports include sea salt (be sure you drive to the salt mine near Port Hedland), manganese, sheep and cattle.
If you decide to spend some time in Port Hedland, you can expect to feel overdressed if you don’t have on a fluro shirt. Virtually every person in Port Hedland is employed in the mines. Many that don’t usually assist the miners with food and shelter, or they’re holidaymakers.
You’ll find lodgings slightly hard to come across in Port Hedland. The ones that are accessible are often very costly. The best place to stay certainly is the Auzcorp Beachside Village. It once was the Port Hedland Detention Centre, but it was transformed into a resort several years ago. In the event that security is a must to you personally, this is certainly the ideal destination.
