**’64 ****Dodge D100 Pickup**

Hobe and Barbara Simons ran a service station in southwest St. Petersburg — a
Phillips 66 on Pasadena and First Avenue S from 1957 to 1968, and then later a
Gulf Station on Fifth Avenue and Travelers Way near the tracks from 1968 to
1973. As their business became successful in the early ’60s their accountant
advised them to purchase something to depreciate. Hobe wanted to replace the
aging 1952 Ford F100 shop truck with something that had more power.
Long story short, Thayer Motors in Clearwater was able to special-order the
Dodge D100 Pickup with a High Performance Package — 426 Street Wedge, push-
button automatic transmission, dual exhaust, power steering, rear axle
traction bars and 6,000-RPM Sun tachometer, all for the total of $3,450. Hobe
