Signs discourage underage drinking (Boston Globe)
Somerville youth will work again this holiday season to plaster thousands of
warning stickers in liquor stores, bars, and restaurants around the city to
deter underage drinking. The Sticker Shock campaign, in its sixth year, places
the yellow placards on cases of beer, exclaiming “Hey You! It’s illegal to
provide alcohol for people under 21.” This is the second year that the
program has included bars and restaurants, said Cory Mashburn, director of the
city’s Office of Prevention. Mashburn said youth volunteers from Somerville
Cares about Prevention, accompanied by a supervisor, plan to visit about half
the 27 liquor stores in the city this year, in addition to many liquor-serving
establishments. “We try to do between 7,000 and 15,000 stickers each year,”
Mashburn said. Each contains a similar message printed in seven languages,
which planners hope will extend the reach of the message. “We’re happy to have
the support of local merchants to implement our Sticker Shock campaign,” said
program participant and Somerville High sophomore Joytika Bhargo, in a
prepared statement. “We hope that it will enforce the idea of keeping the use
